Bring It On

Bring It On: Stones From Afar takes the Chengdu dialect expression ‘甩点’ as both a linguistic entry point and a curatorial method for examining how local language carries cultural memory, social behavior, and collective identity. In Chengdu, ‘甩点’ suggests more than speaking or exchanging ideas; it contains a sense of challenge, playfulness, confrontation, improvisation, and openness. The exhibition expands this everyday expression into a framework for cross-cultural collaboration, bringing together students and artists from different educational and cultural backgrounds to investigate Chengdu through language, field research, interviews, and collective making. Rather than treating dialect simply as a tool of verbal communication, the project approaches it as a living archive through which the values, humor, habits, gender relations, entertainment culture, and social structures of a city can be observed. Specific dialect expressions become starting points for artworks and spatial interventions, allowing linguistic knowledge to move beyond text and into physical, sensory, and participatory forms. Elements of Chengdu’s everyday street culture are reinterpreted within the exhibition space: familiar games are transformed into interactive installations, mahjong is reconstructed through dialect-based symbols, and spoken language is translated into tactile or sound-based systems. Through these transformations, visitors are invited not only to understand Chengdu dialect intellectually, but also to encounter it through movement, touch, listening, participation, and play. The exhibition ultimately proposes that language is never neutral or purely verbal; it is shaped by place, memory, social relationships, and embodied experience. By translating a regional dialect into multiple artistic forms, Bring It On: Stones From Afar explores how local culture can become a platform for broader conversations about communication, belonging, cultural translation, and the ways communities understand themselves through language.
